WNBF STATEMENT ON STEROIDS
Drug-Free Federation’s Comments Related To MLB's "Mitchell
Report"
NEW YORK, NY: With the sports world turned
on its ear by the findings of the M"itchell Report " commissioned
by Major League Baseball, the WNBF has issued the following statement
with regard to drug use. The WNBF is the oldest mandatory drug-tested
athletic federation in existence, having been performing tests for steroids,
growth hormone, diuretics, prohormones and all other performance-enhancing
substances since 1990. All athletes are tested via urinalysis and polygraph
at all events, which number more than 100 competitions total, at a cost
of nearly $200,000.
The WNBF was founded on the predication that illegal performance-enhancing
drugs should not be a part of the competitive sports world. The WNBF is
unequivocally opposed to the use of all such drugs, including steroids,
growth hormone, ephedra and prohormones. These substances have no place
in athletics and their use is unethical. They are dangerous to use and
provide an unfair advantage to those who cheat by taking them. The WNBF
has led the way since 1990 in testing for performance-enhancing drugs
and has a strict policy of penalty enforcement against those caught cheating.
Furthermore, the WNBF spends considerable resources each year educating
its members and the general public about the dangers of steroids and performance-enhancing
drugs. The federation also devotes most of its educational efforts toward
the promotion of fair competitions and revealing healthy alternatives
to drugs, including approved nutritional supplements. By concentrating
on the healthy alternatives, the WNBF makes a stronger statement that
drugs are not welcome in its ranks, and should never be a part of any
athlete’s contest preparation – no matter what the sport.
Each year the WNBF conducts hundreds of tests via WADA-certified urinalysis
testing (at both Redwood Toxicology Laboratories and Quest Diagnostics)
and APA-certified polygraph testing to ensure its members meet the WNBF’s
strict policies. Despite the reputation of bodybuilding being a sport
where steroids are an acceptable tool for success, the WNBF is unwavering
with regard to its strict no-drug, no-excuses policy. It is the leader
among drug-tested sports federations.
