WNBF HISTORY – YEAR BY YEAR WINNERS
1990. •Mr. Universe (Minneapolis, MN): Doyle Washington won the first WNBF title, besting a field of 13 pro men and earning $2500.
•Pro U.S. Cup (Virginia Beach, VA): Doyle Washington made it two in a row amongst 22 WNBF pro men, with his second $2500 payday.
•All American (Los Angeles): In the WNBF’s first trip to the West Coast, John Moore reigned supreme, winning $2500.
•World Championships (New York City). With $21,000 on the line, Mike McCloud and Judy Kalvin-Stiefel claimed the first WNBF World titles.
1991. •Mr. Universe (Des Moines, IA): Johnny Green claimed the Mr. U title and $2500 in his rookie debut in the WNBF.
•All American (Los Angeles): Terry Braddich, another newcomer, picked up a victor’s paycheck, while Kathi Harrison claimed the first of many Women’s WNBF titles.
•World Championships (Union City, NJ): In a field of 54 competitors, Johnny Green claimed the Men’s title, while Kathi Harrison earned $2500 as the Women’s champ.
1992. •American Chiropractic Cup (Spartanburg, SC): Ron Williams and Karen Deo were crowned champions at this first WNBF event in the Southeast.
•Mr./Ms. Universe (Detroit): Bernard Sealy made the most of his Motor City debut, claiming $2500, while Karen Deo was named Ms. Universe.
•World Championships (Union City, NJ): With another huge athlete draw, the Worlds returned to New Jersey. Bernard Sealy claimed his second WNBF title in ‘92, while Kathi Harrison’s win continued her dominance of the Pro Natural Women.
1993. •American Chiropractic Cup (Washington, DC): Doyle Washington returned to the stage and picked up the top prize. Kathi Harrison earned $2500 in her victory.
•World Championships (New York City): Kevin Davidson claimed a tough underdog win worth $5000. Kathi Harrison finished her tremendous year with another victory.
1994. •Women’s Atlantic Coast (Atlantic City, NJ): Karen Close was victorious in this first women’s-only contest in the WNBF. Starting with 1994’s events, all WNBF competitions would be drug-tested for seven years natural.
•Mr./Ms. Universe (New York City): Jose Guzman picked up the Mr. U title upon its return to the Big Apple, while Kathy Unger made a smashing pro debut with a win.
•World Championships (New York City): With 47 pros converging on New York City, Gary Gomez and Kathy Unger were named World Champions.
1995. •Men’s U.S. Cup (Atlantic City, NJ): Teenage sensation Kai Greene won the U.S. Cup in only his second pro competition.
•Mr./Ms. Universe (New York City): Eddie “The Rock” Hernandez picked up a $2000 paycheck in victory, coupled with Sky Wild-Dixon’s Ms. Universe victory.
•World Championships (Atlantic City, NJ): Eddie “The Rock” Hernandez finished ‘95 in tremendous form, earning $5000. Kathy Unger took the Women’s title and $3000.
1996. •U.S. Cup (New York City): A check for $2000 each went to Kai Greene and Linda Dunham as U.S. Cup champs.
•Mr./Ms. Universe (New York City): Kai Greene and Linda Dunham made it an identical finish in the Universe, again claiming $2000 apiece.
•World Championships (New York City): With clear domination, Kai Greene finished his year with a $5000 World Championship victory. Australian Femmy Ayegun made her WNBF debut a good one, winning the Women’s title.
1997. (Weight Classes Introduced to WNBF competitions.) •Mr./Ms. Universe (Fort Worth, TX): Joe Patterson won the heavyweight class and then defeated William Owens (middleweight) and Dave Goodin (lightweight) in the overall posedown. Kayoko Nakano-Nunez was the overall Women’s winner, defeating heavyweight Tina Weber.
•Mr./Ms. International Championships (New York City): British import Nigel Davis overcame heavyweight Julius Ayinla and middleweight Brian McIssac in the Men’s posedown. Super-symmetrical Debbie Smith beat out muscular Linda Dunham for the win.
•World Championships (New York City): Eugene “The Giant Killer” DeVito was crowned Men’s World Champ in the single-class structure, while Nancy Andrews won her first WNBF title in her pro debut.
1998. •Mr. Universe (Wallenpaupack, PA): Ageless Carmi Smith was the heavyweight winner and then beat lightweight Joe Valentino and middleweight Tim Martin for the Mr. U overall prize. Stasi Longo (heavyweight) won the overall title over Dori Frame.
•Mr./Ms. International (New York City): Muscular Jean Theodore took the lightweight class, and then won the posedown over David Hamlette (middleweight) and Desmond Miller (heavyweight). In her pro debut, heavyweight Laurie Dady defeated Dori Frame.
•World Championships (Atlantic City, NJ): In a field of 60 athletes – the largest ever for the WNBF – Dave “Texas Shredder” Goodin and Tracy Bacon won World titles.
1999. •Mr./Ms. Universe (Tucson, AZ): Jeff Primm debuted in style as a pro, defeating Rodney Gaines (lightweight) and Miles Stovall (middleweigth). Powerfully built Nancy Andrews (heavyweight) triumphed over muscular Candace Hatch.
•Mr./Ms. International (New York City): Reginald Smith took the Men’s heavyweight and overall titles over middleweight Tim Martin and lightweight John Johnson. Cassandra Floyd and Kimberly Guzman were named co-winners.
•World Championships (Atlantic City, NJ): 50-year-old Carmi Smith won the $6000 check over rookie lightweight Antony Hall in the first World Championships featuring two weight classes. Among the Women, Nancy Andrews made it two in a row by defeating Cassandra Floyd in the posedown.
2000. •Mr./Ms. International: With superb muscularity and shape, middleweight Miles Stovall beat Wendell Webb (lightweight) and Marlon Hospedales (heavyweight) in the posedown. Lightweight Kristin Sallo defeated Mona Pagan-Ostro among the Women.
•Mr./Ms. Universe (Greensboro, NC): Lightweight victor Vince “The Vacuum” Maradeo downed middleweight Dwayne Broadway and heavyweight Victor Sampson for the win. Thickly muscled Laurie Dady overcame lightweight Teresa Cockerill to earn $1500.
•World Championships (Atlantic City): Marlon Hosepedales used hardness and size to beat Dave “Texas Shredder” Goodin for $6000, while Dori Frame finally took a Worlds overall trophy by downing Dr. Laurie Dady in the posedown.
2001. •Pro Masters Cup (Northboro, MA): 51-year-old Carmi Smith won the inaugural title for men over age 40.
•Mr./Ms. Universe (New York City): Super-shredded Reggie Allen defeated lightweight Joe Valentino and heavyweight Robert Lee Brown in the Mr. Universe posedown. Rosa Camilo won out over Karen Miller in both ladies’ pro debuts.
•Mr./Ms. International (New York City): Dave “Texas Shredder” Goodin bested Dr. Kent Julius (lightweight) and Robert Lee Brown (heavyweight) for $1500. Ultra-defined Becky Olinger defeated Lorrie Mass in the posedown to also earn $1500. •World Championships (New York City): The 2001 Worlds were cancelled due to the 9/11 tragedy, which damaged the Tribeca Theater where the show was to be held.
2002. •American Championships (Austin, TX): Miles Stovall and T.L. Bartch won the inaugural WNBF American titles.
•Pro Masters Cup (Northboro, MA): Dwayne Broadway picked up $1000 in victory.
•Mr./Ms. Universe (New York City): Dwayne Broadway took his second straight win by defeating lightweight Rodney Walch and heavyweight Jeff Pruett in the posedown. Ultra-defined Jody Poirier took the overall over hard and muscular Kathy DiMartino.
•Mr./Ms. International (Las Vegas): Massive Elvernie McGee bested lightweight Gary Dalton in the two-class format. Dori Frame won out over Karen Miller in the posedown.
•World Championships (NYC). Paul Neil and Miles Stovall were crowned co-winners at the Worlds. Laurie Dady beat Dori Frame for the Women’s $4000 top prize.
2003. •American Championships (Austin, TX): Walter Smith and T.L. Bartch were named American champs in Texas, each earning $1000.
•Pro Masters Cup (Northboro, MA): Top WNBF money earner Dave Goodin won the Cup. At the same time, Tammy Cann won the first WNBF Figure title – Northeast Classic Figure.
•Mr./Ms. Universe (New York City): Rookie Tiger Wilson defeated lightweight Dave Goodin and Brit heavyweight Wesley Clarke in the overall posedown. Canadian Dora Marie Naber won the overall prize by defeating Dori Frame.
•Mr./Ms. International (Kansas City, KS): Heavyweight Walter Smith bested lightweight Kareem Petteway to win $1000. Tammy Chapman won the Women’s single class.
•World Championships (New York City): British import Nigel Davis was named lightweight and overall World Champ, downing Miles Stovall in the posedown. Nancy Andrews made it three Worlds titles by beating out Dori Frame. Gorgeous Lisa Brewer was named the first Ms. Exercise World Figure Champ.
2004. •American Championships (Austin, TX): Ben “The Bull” Tennessen made his pro debut in style, defeating 21 other men. Katy Holmes was crowned Women’s champ. Alicia Denson was named American Figure Champion.
•Pro Masters Cup (Northboro, MA): In a field of 11, Dwayne Broadway took home the top prize. Yvonne Bates won the WNBF Northeast Figure title.
•Mr./Ms. Universe (Barbados): Rob Hope defeated Kareem Petteway and Wesley Clarke in the posedown. Carla Yee Sing won the overall over Dori Frame.
•Natural Atlantic Coast Figure (High Point, NC): Jelena Djordjevic was the winner.
*Caribbean Figure Championships (Cayman Islands): Yvonne Bates took top prize.
•Mr./Ms. International (Kansas City, KS): Rookie Ekow Wilmot won out over heavyweight Tyrone Wright, while newcomer Deb Gudowicz overcame Mary Langenfeld.
•World Championships (New York City): Rob Hope (lightweight) beat heavyweight Ben “The Bull” Tennessen to win the title. Nancy Andrews (light) defeated Katy Holmes (heavy). Jelena Djordjevic won the Ms. Exercise Figure Worlds title.
2005. •American Championships (Austin, TX): Miles Stovall & Karen Miller won titles.
•Northeast Figure Championships (Worcester, MA): Angela Mraz won in her pro debut.
•Natural Atlantic Coast Figure (High Point, NC): Ashley King picked up a $1000 victory.
•Mr./Ms. International (Kansas City, KS): Heavyweight Chris Oliver beat Nicholas Katrichis. Kim Nesbitt (lightweight) beat Sarah Crane. Siobhan Tewari was Figure champ.
•Pro Masters Cup (Putman, CT): Dave Goodin wins the title in the largest Masters turnout ever (16 men).
•World Championships (NYC): Rob Hope beat heavyweight Ben Tennessen among the Men. Nancy Hanna (lighweight) won over Liza Larence for the Women’s title. Angela Mraz (short class) won over Amy Llinas (tall) in the Ms. Exercise Figure Worlds.
2006. •American Championships (Austin, TX): Rodney “Gunz” Helaire & Joan Lopez were crowned American bodybuilding champs.
•Northeast Figure Championships (Worcester, MA): Angela Mraz won her second straight Northeast Figure title.
•Mr./Ms. Universe & Caribbean Figure (Cayman Islands): Brandon Greenwood (heavyweight) beat Dave Goodin for the Mr. Universe overall. Kristi Dietrich won the Ms. Universe. Georgette Eugene-Dewey was the Caribbean Figure Champion.
•U.S. Cup (Augusta, GA): Rookie Clarence McGill (middleweight) beat Rodney Helaire (heavyweight) and Dave Goodin. Katy Holmes defeated lightweight Jan Rowlett. Arlene Lurey won the overall Figure over tall class winner Carla Fields.
•Mr./Ms. International (Kansas City, KS): Lightweight Brian Whitacre beat heavyweight Robert Johnson. Brenda Rahe (lightweight) defeated Stephanie Foley among the Women. In the International Figure division, Michelle Apple won $1000.
•World Championships (New York City): Middleweight Jon Harris took the overall by defeating Luis Santiago (lightweight) and Ben Tennessen (heavy) in the posedown. Cheryl Myers won $4000 among the Women by defeating lightweight Brenda Rahe. And Angela Mraz took the Ms. Exercise World Figure title by overcoming Amy Llinas (tall class).
2007. •Mr./Ms. Universe (Cayman Islands): Jim Cordova (lightweight) defeated Rodney “Guns” Helaire for the overall Mr. Universe title, winning $1700. Joan Lopez won the $1700 Ms. Universe top prize. Meanwhile, Arlene Lurey took the Ms. Universe Figure title and $1000.
•American Championships (Worcester, MA): Jim Cordova won the American overall title by beating Tim Martin (heavyweight). Elaine Goodrow claimed the Women’s American title. In the pro Northeast Classic Figure, Melissa Kelley claimed the title.
•Mr./Ms. International (Overland Park, KS): Rodney Helaire picked up the overall by defeating lightweight Efford Rogers. Brenda Rahe downed heavyweight Liza Larence in the Ms. International. Kim Smith won the Figure championships in her pro debut.
•Masters Cup (Cedar Rapids, IA): Leroy Perry won the Men’s Over-40 title, while Karen Miller won for the Women. Marla Battles was named Figure champion.
•River City Figure (San Antonio, TX): Patrice Arnold won the inaugural title.
•Bluffs Classic Figure (Council Bluffs, IA): Lisa Matthew was the new Figure champ.
•World Championships (New York City): Jim Cordova swept the middleweight class and the $6000 overall title, beating Brian Whitacre (lightweight) and Rodney Helaire (heavyweight) in the posedown. Brenda Rahe successfully defended her World title, and also took the $4000 overall award over heavyweight Cheryl Myers. The Ms. Exercise Figure Worlds overall title and $2000 went to Angela Mraz for the third straight year, who beat tall class champ Michelle Shepherd.
2008. •Iron Eagle Figure Championships (Savannah, GA): Alli Kerr claimed a $1000 victory in this new addition to the WNBF pro figure circuit.
•Mr./Ms. Universe (Cayman Islands): Clarence McGill claimed the $1700 top prize in a single-class format. Liza Larence brought home the Ms. Universe title. In the Universe Figure division, Alli Kerr made it two victories in a row with her win.
•American Championships (Worcester, MA): Heavyweight winner Shevon Cunningham defeated lightweight Rodney Walch for the $1000 prize. Kathy McClure also won $1000 as the Women’s champ. In the pro Northeast Classic Figure, Melissa Kelley claimed the title for a second consecutive year.
•Mid-America Championships (Evansville, IN): Big Martin Daniels (heavyweight) claimed $1000 in this first WNBF show in Indiana, overcoming Tony Ruffin (lightweight). Among the ladies, Katy Holmes struck gold, defeating lightweight Debra Gudowicz for the $1000 prize. Kori Propst took the Figure title in her pro debut.
•Mr./Ms. International (Overland Park, KS): In a three-class structure, Leroy Perry (heavyweight) took top honors and $1250 over Brad Steere (lightweight) and Robert Johnson Jr. Defending champion Brenda Rahe made it three International wins in a row, claiming $1250 by beating heavyweight Katy Holmes. Figure winner Arlene Lurey claimed the $1000 prize.
•Masters Cup (Cedar Rapids, IA): Leroy Perry won his second straight Men’s Over-40 title, beating Mike Grant (lightweight) in the posedown. Cindy Myerhofer, won for the Women, while Lisa Matthew was named Figure champion.
•Bluffs Classic Figure (Council Bluffs, IA): Lisa Matthew did double duty at the Masters Cup/Bluffs Classic dual event, winning her second straight Bluffs Figure title.
•World Championships (New York City): Brandon Greenwood won the middleweight crown, then defeated Rodney Helaire (heavyweight) and Brian Whitacre (lightweight) for the $6000 overall prize, taking the WNBF World title back to Great Britain. In the “rubber match,” Brenda Rahe (lightweight) triumphed over Cheryl Myers (heavyweight) in the posedown, earning $4000. Angela Mraz narrowly won the Ms. Exercise World Figure short class crown, but then defeated tall champ Janet Marsico for the $2000 overall prize – winning her fourth straight Ms. Exercise victory.
