WNBF – It's Where The Money Is!
The world leader in DRUG-TESTED bodybuilding and figure competitions is the WORLD NATURAL BODYBUILDING FEDERATION!
Since the inaugural Pro Natural Mr. Universe in 1990, the WNBF has staged over 65 bodybuilding contests for both men and women and more than 36 fitness/figure contests for women. During this time, the federation has awarded over $886,000 in total prize money and has spent $170,000 on comprehensive drug-testing. Competitions have been staged in locations ranging from Atlantic City to Las Vegas and Los Angeles to New York City. In total, some 520 bodybuilders and figure/fitness athletes have participated in WNBF shows.
The WNBF was born out of a need to address the prevalence of steroids in professional bodybuilding. While amateur naturals competed in drug-tested contests, there was no pro level for them once they reached the top of their ranks. The WNBF changed all that. Cheh N. Low, publisher of Natural Bodybuilding & Fitness, gathered top bodybuilding officials in 1989 to establish a new federation. A five-year drug free requirement was set (changed to seven years in 1994) with polygraph and urinalysis testing at each show. Former Natural USA champ Steve Downs was brought in as Chairman and helped establish drug-testing guidelines that would become the driving force behind the federation.
Strict drug-testing at every WNBF event includes both polygraph (lie-detector) and urinalysis testing. Each athlete is tested via a long-method polygraph by certified examiners prior to admittance to an event. The men and women must then submit to urinalysis testing that is conducted by the California lab that performed urine tests for the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games. In order to win prize money, athletes must pass both tests, verifying that no steroids, diuretics, growth hormones or other illegal drugs have been used in the past seven years.
New to the WNBF in 2003 was the addition of drug-screened pro figure contests. In 2004, the first WNBF shows held on foreign soil were scheduled, with the Pro Natural Mr./Ms. Universe Bodybuilding Championships coming to Barbados and the Pro Natural Caribbean Figure Championships being staged in the Cayman Islands.
The WNBF will award more than $81,000 in prize money in 2008, and will finish the year at more than $950,000 in prize money handed to the best Pro Natural bodybuilders and figure competitors in the world!
